Every time you played a VHS tape, it got worse. The magnetic particles on the tape surface degraded with each pass over the playback head. Colors bled. Edges softened. Tracking lines crawled across the screen. The medium was destroying itself in slow motion, and we watched anyway.
Generational Loss
Before digital copying, duplication meant degradation. A copy of a copy of a copy accumulated noise at each stage. This was called generational loss, and it was considered a defect.
But defects, given enough time, become aesthetics.
The scan lines, the color bleeding, the horizontal tearing -- these artifacts are now deliberately applied to digital media to evoke a feeling. Not the feeling of watching a VHS tape, exactly, but the feeling of remembering watching a VHS tape. The nostalgia is for the imperfection itself.
The Tracking Adjustment
Every VCR had a tracking knob or button. When the tape and the playback head fell out of alignment, you would see a band of static rolling up or down the screen. Adjusting the tracking was a ritual -- turning the dial slowly, watching the static bar drift and shrink until the image stabilized.
This interaction between human and machine is something digital playback eliminated entirely. A streaming video either works or it buffers. There is no in-between state, no partial signal, no negotiation.
Why We Simulate Decay
Modern glitch art and vaporwave aesthetics borrow heavily from VHS degradation:
- Scan lines -- Horizontal lines overlaid on the image to simulate CRT display
- Chromatic aberration -- Color channels shifted slightly to mimic signal bleed
- Noise grain -- Random static overlaid to simulate tape hiss
- Datamoshing -- Deliberately corrupting video compression to create surreal motion artifacts

These techniques are not attempts at realism. Nobody is fooled into thinking they are watching actual VHS footage. The simulation is the point -- it is a visual shorthand for a specific era and its relationship to technology.
The Warmth of Imperfection
There is a parallel in audio. Vinyl records, tape saturation, and tube amplifiers all introduce harmonic distortion that we describe as "warm." Digital audio is technically superior -- lower noise floor, wider dynamic range, perfect reproduction. But technical superiority is not the same as emotional resonance.
VHS degradation operates on the same principle. A perfectly sharp, perfectly color-accurate image is not inherently more meaningful than a degraded one. Sometimes the signal loss is the signal.
