Subspace Communications Grid

[comms] [operations]

The Orbital Communication Array manages all subspace radio transmissions, local sector broadcasts, and vessel-to-vessel comm lines. Subspace communications utilize modulated tachyon beams to bypass the standard light-speed limit, permitting near-instantaneous contact with orbital docks up to five light-years away. For longer distances, transmission relays must be established.

The primary transceiver array is mounted on the upper command deck, featuring a stabilized parabolic dish aligned with local stellar beacons. When the vessel enters planetary shadow, the communication system can route signal traffic through auxiliary omnidirectional antennae situated along the port and starboard hulls, though bandwidth is significantly reduced.

Engineers must ensure the subspace transceiver remains calibrated to the fleet's frequency grid. Thermal noise in the emitter coils can introduce signal degradation and packet loss during long transmissions. Maintenance protocols require purging the transmitter waveguides with gaseous nitrogen and checking the signal-to-noise ratio against baseline parameters.

If signal interference exceeds forty percent, the automated backup system will switch to emergency laser-link mode to maintain vital data streams with nearby navigation buoys and companion vessels.
